In a new article in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, “COVID-19: an Imperative to Bridge the Gap Between Medicine And Public Health,” Dr. Alvin I. Mushlin discusses the detrimental gap between public health and medical care, as further revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic in America. Dr. Mushlin, a professor of population health sciences and medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, notes that diagnosis, treatment of diseases and prevention of disease are all necessary to control outbreaks. An integration of and alliance between medicine and public health will give our communities the best chance to survive future global infectious diseases and chronic illnesses.
