Reopening US Schools in the Era of COVID-19: Practical Guidance From Other Nations

A new JAMA Health Forum article considers the reopening of U.S. schools in the era of COVID-19. Dr. Rainu Kaushal, MD, MPH, senior associate dean for clinical research and Nanette Laitman Distinguished Professor and chair of population health sciences, joined Dr. Erika L. Abramson, MD, MSc, associate professor of population health sciences and pediatrics and Nanette Laitman Clinical Scholar in population health sciences/quality of care research, and tri-institutional MD-PhD program student, Tanmoy Das Lala, to research guidelines for reopening schools in the fall given an expected viral resurgence. Among many considerations, the researchers believe that child-friendly national testing, safe transportation to and from schools, precautions within schools, and operational upgrades to enhance social distancing are necessary for a safe return.
