Health Policy and Economics Research Associate

The Division of Health Policy and Economics in the Department of Population Health Sciences at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) in New York City is recruiting a doctoral level research associate to work closely with division faculty in a team science environment to lead advanced analyses of administrative claims and other large secondary data sources; produce high-quality results displays for manuscripts; collaborate on manuscripts and grant proposals; and support data acquisition and management activities. The position will include opportunities to lead manuscripts, presentations, and other scholarly and policy products.

Faculty in the Division of Health Policy and Economics study the effects of public and private health policies and organizational processes on healthcare access, quality, and cost; population health outcomes; and health equity. Faculty focus on a range of topics including, but not limited to, alternative payment models; consolidation of provider organizations; private equity investment in healthcare; telehealth; Medicaid policy; long-term and post-acute care; and social determinants of health and equity. We are particularly seeking candidates with interests in the following areas:

  • The impact of primary care access and utilization on intermediate and long-term spending and health outcomes.
  • Identifying the quality and determinants of quality for Medicare Advantage plans/contracts.
  • Role of safety net hospitals in health system consolidation.

The ideal candidate will be a quantitative researcher with experience using advanced econometric approaches to analyze large health insurance claims-based analytic files. Experience with other analytic methods and data, such as machine learning analysis of electronic health record data and qualitative methods, is valuable but not required.

Salary established below per annum commensurate with qualifications experience:
$90,000-$115,000

Weill Cornell Medicine provides the above salary range in compliance with the New York City law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range listed is for full‐time employment not including bonuses, clinical incentive compensation, or benefits. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors including but not limited to internal equity, specialty, training, and hospital/community needs.

The above salary range for New York City based roles represents WCM’s good faith and reasonable estimate of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications

  • PhD in health economics, health services research, health policy, or a related field.
  • Experience conducting research using administrative data
  • Strong programming skills in Stata, SAS and/or R
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team

The Department of Population Health Sciences has significant data resources, including extensive claims data from Medicare, Medicaid, and major private insurers and the INSIGHT Clinical Research Network (the largest urban clinical data network in the country).  We host a state-of-the-art computing environment, the Data Core, which serves as a secure platform for data analysis and includes state and national data available for reuse.
