Professor/Associate Professor (Focus on Collaborative Data Science)

The Department of Population Health Sciences at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City invites applications for the position of senior faculty member (Professor or Associate Professor) who will be primarily focusing on collaborative health data science. The faculty member will play a leadership role in the design and execution of translational, clinical, and health services research with large clinical data sets, build collaborations, and bring in external funding.

The Department of Population Health Sciences has significant data resources including but not limited to: 1) the EHR from the INSIGHT Clinical Research Network, a unique collaboration of more than 20 New York City-area medical institutions and organizations funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI); 2) PCORnet-RECOVER EHR, a collaboration among clinical research networks, including INSIGHT, that represents 41 institutions across the nation and is funded as part of the NIH Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) initiative; and 3) Inovalon, which is a national, multi-payer claims database that includes ~226 million unique individuals across Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, and commercial plans, with data sourced directly from more than 160 payers. We also established the new WCM Data Coordination Center where we will host data from large amounts of clinical trials and make innovations. In addition, we have access to the state-of-the-art computing environments at WCM and Cornell University, such as the Scientific Computing Unit (SCU), where data is served to users via a Mellanox HDR Infiniband network infrastructure with uplinks at 200GBs. Its analytical systems include 128 graphics processing units (GPUs) using a variety of nVIDIA P100, V100 and A100 and A40 cards along with 3424 total traditional CPUs. We are an active member of the New York State Empire AI consortium, where our faculty have access to the 144 H100 GPUs in its current “Alpha” machine. The computing power will be tripled in its “Beta” version that will be released later this year.

The successful applicant will be an accomplished academic researcher with exemplary leadership and funding experience, as well as strong records on forming collaborations and initiatives. The faculty will join a highly collaborative, rapidly growing department, and sit in the newly named Division of Health Informatics and Artificial Intelligence. Our faculties interact extensively across Weill Cornell Medicine, with colleagues at Cornell Tech and Cornell University (particularly Cornell Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, and Cornell Engineering), as well as with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (ranked 7th in the country by U.S. News & World Report) and its multi-hospital system. The position has the potential for WCM institutional leadership roles.

The ideal candidate will have (1) a doctoral degree or an MD with equivalent training in health informatics, data science or a closely related field, (2) excellent communication skills, (3) a strong track record of initiating and leading collaborative research programs as well as success in extramural funding, (4) expertise in analyses of large clinical data sets including electronic health record and claims data, and (5) enthusiasm for mentoring junior faculty. Collaborative leadership skills are critical.

Interested applicants should submit, via email: (1) a cover letter describing their qualifications for and interest in the position; (2) a recent CV; and (3) the names and contact information of three references to Ancheska Castillo at phs_admin@med.cornell.edu as soon as possible. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
