Characteristics of Acute Kidney Injury in Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients in an Urban Academic Medical Center

Dr. Yiye Zhang

Yiye Zhang, PhD, MS, is senior author of a new Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology article examining acute kidney injury (AKI) in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The researchers studied a cohort of 1,002 patients admitted with COVID-19 through the Emergency Department at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center from March 1 to April 19, 2020, comparing clinical characteristics of patients with AKI to those without AKI. Dr. Zhang and colleagues identified a high incidence of AKI in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and found that patients with AKI had higher mortality rates than patients without. A significant amount of the patients with AKI did not have a complete kidney function recovery.
