COVID-19 and the Financial Health of US Hospitals

In a new article in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Drs. Dhruv Khullar, William Schpero, and Amy Bond reviewed data from the RAND Corporation Healthcare Provider Cost Reporting Information System (HCRIS) files and American Hospital Association Annual Survey. Their research focused on American hospitals’ ability to remain financially solvent amid unprecedented changes in care delivery and billable services during the COVID-19 pandemic. They found that hospitals that are smaller, independent, rural, and have critical access status are particularly at risk.
