Understanding Enterprise Data Warehouses to Support Clinical and Translational Research

An enterprise data warehouse for research, or EDW4R, allows for secondary use of electronic health record (EHR) data. Investigators use this data to conduct research and often inform policy. Health care organizations, including Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) hubs funded by the National Institutes of Health, have sought to support and improve use of EDW4R.

In an article in JAMIA, Dr. Thomas Campion, chief research informatics officer and associate professor of research in population health sciences and healthcare policy research in pediatrics, and colleagues evaluated the impact, sustainability, demand management, and accessibility of EDW4R. Through structured interviews, researchers found that EDW4R has created institutional capacity for single- and multi-center studies from multiple disciplines. Demand for EDW4R has increased and been met with varying approaches to ensuring sustainability and accessibility. With this study, informatics leaders can better understand how to support the use of EDW4R.
