Weill Cornell Medicine Launches Master of Science in Health Informatics and Artificial Intelligence

Weill Cornell Medicine is excited to announce that the Master of Science in Health Informatics has been renamed the Master of Science in Health Informatics and Artificial Intelligence. Featuring two specialized concentrations, the program will provide students with a strong foundation in healthcare delivery, informatics, data science, and responsible innovation. The program can be completed in one year or in two years for part-time enrollees.  

This change reflects the program’s continued commitment to preparing the next generation of health informaticians and AI data scientists. Over the past decade, the healthcare landscape has witnessed remarkable technological breakthroughs, many of which can be attributed to advances in health information science, data science, and artificial intelligence. Our program curriculum has evolved alongside these developments to address emerging workplace needs and prepare graduates for a rapidly changing field.  

“The health informatics (HI) and artificial intelligence (AI) dual-concentration design will allow students to tailor their studies according to their professional interests and goals,” said Dr. Chang Su, program director and assistant professor of population health sciences.   

“The HI concentration prepares students to design, integrate, and evaluate data-driven systems for healthcare,” he explained. “Students gain practical expertise in health data infrastructure, interoperability, clinical workflows, decision support, data management, and analytics.” The HI coursework emphasizes rigorous system evaluation, implementation, and governance. Graduates are equipped to lead informatics initiatives across clinical care, health systems, and digital health organizations. 

“Students in the AI concentration learn to develop, validate, and deploy advanced AI solutions for healthcare. They are trained in machine learning, deep learning, clinical natural language processing, and generative AI, with applications across clinical, imaging, omics, and more biomedical modalities,” Dr. Su added. The AI coursework emphasizes practical skills in Python-based programming, rigorous evaluation, reproducibility, and ethical AI. Graduates gain proficiency in building AI solutions for clinical care, population health, and the life sciences. 

Dr. Yunyu Xiao, associate program director of program enhancement and assistant professor of population health sciences, highlighted the program’s focus on career readiness.  “HI and AI are among the fastest-growing career paths in healthcare, and this program is designed to meet that demand head-on,” she said. “Students won't just learn informatics and AI methods in the abstract. They'll apply them to real-world health problems, from predicting mental health risk to understanding how social determinants shape outcomes, and they'll graduate with a portfolio of work that speaks directly to what health systems, industry, and research teams need.” 

“AI is rapidly reshaping how we understand health, deliver care, and conduct biomedical research,” said Dr. Fei Wang, chief of the Division of Health Informatics and Artificial Intelligence and associate dean for artificial intelligence and data science. “The next generation of talents will need to understand not only how to develop advanced AI technologies, but also how to integrate them responsibly and effectively into complex healthcare environments. By bringing health informatics and AI together, this program will prepare students to translate technological innovation into meaningful improvements in health and healthcare.” 

The program also contributes to Cornell’s university-wide effort to advance the institution’s leadership in AI research and education. Through the AI to Advance Medicine initiative, Weill Cornell Medicine and Cornell Tech are bringing together cutting-edge analytics, machine learning, and clinical insight to drive innovation across healthcare.
