The Division of Health Informatics in the Department of Population Health Sciences has been renamed the Division of Health Informatics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). As digital health evolves, this updated name reflects an ongoing commitment to advancing the ethical and informed use of AI in health care.
Dr. Fei Wang, a distinguished researcher and leader in health informatics and artificial intelligence, will serve as division chief. He was recently appointed the associate dean for AI and data science at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM), senior faculty fellow in clinical AI at Cornell Tech, and senior technical advisor at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
The division focuses on the intelligent use of health care data to inform policy and decision-making. "Faculty [in this division] have produced impactful research on the use of AI in cancer treatment, mental health, and disease pathology,” said Dr. Rainu Kaushal, senior associate dean for clinical research and chair of the Department of Population Health Sciences. “This updated division name is a testament to the excellence of the community we have built and our goal to transform health care delivery.”
Dr. Wang has been an integral part of the Division of Health Informatics since 2016. Throughout his faculty appointments, he has led pioneering efforts to develop AI and machine learning models for analyzing diverse biomedical data, especially electronic health records. His work on patient similarity analytics, disease subtyping and progression modeling, and target trial emulation is widely cited.
Notably, Dr. Wang is the founder of the Institute of AI for Digital Health (AIDH) at WCM. The AIDH brings together experts in computational science and clinical medicine engaging in multi-disciplinary research to advance individualized health and health care through AI technologies. The institute collaborates closely with Cornell University, Cornell Tech, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Hospital for Special Surgery, and The Rockefeller University.
“As division chief, I am committed to promoting research excellence,” said Dr. Wang. “Across WCM, we aim to foster expertise across the entire spectrum of health informatics and AI; build competitive graduate training programs; and facilitate tech transfer and commercialization activities for the promising technology we are developing.”
